SCS launches SmartCure™ at JEC Paris 2010

4th March 2010
Solent Composite Systems Ltd a leading wind energy industry tier one supplier based on the Isle of Wight launches its new
“SmartCure™ low energy high precision curing system”
for manufacturing turbine rotor blades, at the JEC in Paris April 13-15 2010. SmartCure™ part of the SmartMould™ Rotor Blade Manufacturing System, will feature on SCS partners’ stands:
MULTIPLAST, France, Stand L71 and
MEL Composites, Spain, Stand Q37

“Saving energy while generating energy”

The SmartCure™ system accurately controls the cure of the blade laminate stack by heating the blade mould surface with electrical power delivered in controlled pulses. SmartCure™ reduces energy consumption by over 50%.

SmartCure™ responds rapidly to changes in temperature to anticipate and control the potential exothermic properties of the blade laminate stack. This delivers a high degree of manufacturing control and de-risks the complete curing process, especially critical in large offshore blades.

SmartCure™ is designed for processing of wet resin by vacuum infusion and pre-preg materials - glass or carbon fibre. Although primarily developed for out-of-autoclave operations the system is also compatible for use in autoclaves.

The SCS integrated SmartMould™ approach offers turbine manufactures a tailor made, cost-effective rotor blade mould system, using optimum design, advanced materials and the most efficient production process. Drawing on its extensive knowledge base SCS offers an unrivalled service for blade mould engineering and blade component manufacture.

SCS offers bespoke SmartMould™ packages as turnkey blade manufacturing systems designed for repeated daily process cycles with the minimum of maintenance downtime. The SmartMould™ approach considers the blade shape, finish, structure, material and manufacturing process. Working in tandem with the turbine blade design engineers, and processing professionals, SmartMould™ provides an integrated total solution for blade manufacturing that delivers optimum output, consistent high quality and long service life.

SmartMould™ now with integrated SmartCure™ ensures the blade manufacturer is provided with a durable curing system that meets all required performance and safety criteria, with significant decrease in power consumption. Blade manufacturing costs are further reduced by minimising after- finishing, reducing labour, waste, and downtime whilst maximising output.

The SmartMould™ approach anticipates the increasing challenges faced by today’s wind energy industry for ever larger blades and delivers a fully integrated solution for manufacturing high performance competitive rotor blades at lower cost to meet the needs of the evolving offshore wind turbine market.
