British mould maker in best-of-breed team
Solent Composite Systems (SCS), based in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, an innovative UK composites specialist renowned for its high-performance solutions for technically-demanding applications, is playing a key role in a world-class wind-turbine team. The team has been tasked with designing and manufacturing the industry-leading DeWind D8 wind turbine.
This leading supplier of moulds and components to the wind energy sector has taken a unique approach to the challenges faced by the composites industry. The result is a range of design and manufacturing innovations for the production of rotor blades – and contracts for customers such as GE Wind, Vestas and NEG Micon. SCS has designed and developed integrated Rotor Blade Manufacturing System (RBMS) moulds for the shells, webs and girders of the D8’s 40 metre blades.
‘The mould itself is the key enabling factor in allowing the blades to be made to the highest quality with the least possible secondary operations and finishing work and therefore the lowest cost,’ explains Managing Director Huw Radley. ‘To maximise productivity we have developed a totally integrated solution which encompasses eight SmartMouldTM elements to optimise blade shape, finish, structure, material and the manufacturing process itself.’
Having consolidated its reputation in Europe and established the system’s ability to handle ever-larger blade sizes, SCS is looking to extend its offer. Convinced that the combination of its RBMS approach and accumulated experience would be of value to blade manufacturing start-ups, the company is being helped by the UK Government’s Renewables Trade Promotion Service to take a turnkey service to Asia.
