Success again for SCS at IOW Chamber of Commerce Business Aw

27th November 2006
Huw Radley MD receives Award Solent Composite Systems Ltd (SCS) has been voted as Winner “Manufacturing Award” at the IOW Chamber of Commerce Tourism & Industry Business Awards for Excellence 2006. This event now in its 21st year brings together the most successful Island based companies. SCS also received a Highly Commended Certificate in the International Award category

Commenting on the award, Managing Director Huw Radley said,

“Achieving the Manufacturing Award is a fantastic result for our operations team who showed great commitment and determination to perform as a world class business, where meeting customer requirements on time and on budget is the key measurement.

Success for SCS is largely based on its intellectual property in composites technology, highly competent people skills and stringent project management. Building on these values has achieved success and rapid growth in serving the highly demanding Offshore Oil and Gas industry where Quality, Health Safety and Environmental compliance are second to none”

In today’s environment where energy resources are so critical, especially in the UK gas supply market SCS has been playing a partnership role in securing the UK’s gas supplies coming from the important new natural gas fields in Norway, in particular the recent exploration of the Barents Sea in Hammerfest Norway. SCS designs and manufactures ProTek™ composite fire and blast protection systems for the emergency shut down valves at Statoil’s new Snøhvit (Snowhite) LNG plant which opens in mid 2007.

The company’s other main focus is in the burgeoning renewable energy sector, - both wind, tidal stream and micro-generation where it provides a portfolio of services in design development and manufacturing of wind turbine blade moulds and related component using its specialised composite technology.

Solent Composite Systems is a member of the British Plastics Federation, (BPF) Composites Group, and the Composites Processing Association (CPA). In addition to it’s IOW Chamber affiliation SCS is a member of the Norwegian British Chamber of Commerce NBCC. In recognition of its role in Renewable Energy SCS is member of both the British and European Wind Energy Associations (BWEA & EWEA)

SCS has ISO 9001 certification and is working towards ISO 14001- Environmental and OHAS18001 Health and Safety, both of which will be audited later this year. SCS also has the Norwegian Achilles and UK FPAL certification for suppliers to the Offshore Oil and Gas industry.

Solent Composite Systems operates from three sites on the IOW in East and West Cowes. In the last 12 month factory space has almost doubled. Total employment peaked at 40 persons, and SCS economic impact on the IOW supply chain exceeded £1.5 million. In 2005 SCS was awarded as best “New Business” on the IOW.
