ProTek™ Composites Fire & Blast enclosures installed at Ormen Lange gas processing plant in Nyhamna Norway.
In the closing stages of construction Aker Kvaerner contracted SCS to design and build ProTek™ composite fire and blast protection enclosures for the blow-down valve accumulators at Hydro’s Nyhamna gas processing plant in Aukra, Norway, which supports the vast Ormen Lange gas field. SCS were set a fast-track milestone date by main contractor Aker Kvaerner. By the critical date of July 15th SCS had successfully manufactured and installed the required 32 enclosures in readiness for the planned start up phase of the plant at the end of July 2007.
The ProTek™ passive fire and blast restraint system was designed and manufactured by Solent Composite Systems Ltd (SCS) based on the Isle of Wight. SCS was selected by Hydro and Aker Kvaerner to supply the ProTek™ enclosures for the blow-down valve accumulators based on its many years proven experience in the North Sea and Norwegian LNG plants such as Statoil Hammerfest and Shell Kollsnes, building “on time” and “on budget ”.
The Nyhamna gas plant serving the Ormen Lange field will be taken over from Hydro by Shell as Operator when fully commissioned at the end of 2007. The gas will be routed through the Langeled pipeline via the Sleipner junction to Easington and will supply a high proportion of the UK’s critical gas needs in coming years. The facility deploys leading edge technology so it was not surprising to see why Aker Kvaerner selected ProTek™ with its worldwide successful 15 year track record on oil and gas installations.
At Nyhamna the ProTek™ protection enclosures must remain functional under all circumstances including the most severe jet fire and blast conditions. In addition they must withstand the rigours of the severe prevailing weather conditions. In selecting ProTek™, Hydro and Aker Kvaerner recognised the attractive life-cost advantages over traditionally used systems. In addition the installation is very quick and easy- extremely important in these days of labour shortage and accommodation restrictions offshore. No hot work is required during installation - critical for operational continuity.
ProTek™ is manufactured from an advanced composite panel system which is lightweight and has wide design versatility. Being virtually inert, there is zero corrosion risk and the outstanding weather resistance, provides a maintenance free life for at least 30 years, with no pollution risk. The fire performance is certified by Lloyds and DNV and will withstand over two hours jet fire test at 0.3 kg /sec gas release, and blast tests up to 1.5 barg. DNV have examined and certified the SCS design methodology for fire and blast protection, effectively creating a type approval for the use of ProTek™ in such applications.
In addition to this blow down accumulator application, ProTek™ is widely used for ESDV/actuator protection, fire and blast walls, marine fire partitions, underdeck/splashzone and flexible riser passive fire protection as well sub-sea structures and encapsulations. ProTek™ meets all current standards for fire and blast protection as well as thermal insulation. It recently also passed the Norsok noise attenuation test achieving up to 38DB reduction.
Solent Composite Systems is a member of the British Plastics Federation, Composites Group, and UK Composites. SCS is Achilles JQS and FPAL registered. In 2007 SCS was certified by DNV to ISO 9001 Quality, ISO 14001 Environmental and OHSAS 18001 under the Integrated Management System.
