ProTek™ Control Boxes specified for Hammerfest LNG Plant

10th July 2007
ProTek Switch Box ProTek™ Composite Control Boxes specified by Statoil for Hammerfest LNG plant

Following recent success in supplying the Fire and Blast protection for the main ESDVs at the Hammerfest LNG plant Solent Composite Systems Ltd (SCS) has been selected by Statoil and contractor Aker Stord to supply their ProTek™ enclosures for the control switch housings on the shutdown valves on the prestigious Snøhvit LNG plant in Hammerfest Norway.

The Snøhvit site located in the arduous climate of the Barents Sea is Europe’s first export facility for liquefied natural gas. The control boxes 106 in all are installed on the LNG processing plant on Melkøya island just outside Hammerfest Northern Norway. The facility deploys leading edge technology so it was not surprising to see why Statoil selected ProTek™ with its long track record in offshore installations where technical integrity is paramount to the stringent safety systems.

At Melkøya ProTek™ enclosure are largely used in the protection of emergency shut down valves (ESDV) and actuators, which must remain functional under all circumstances including the most severe jet fire and blast conditions. In addition they must withstand the rigours of the severe arctic winter. In selecting ProTek™ Aker Stord recognised the life cycle cost advantage over traditionally used soft jacket systems which tend to deteriorate over time. ProTek™ PFP systems have been in service in the North Sea for over 15 years with no complaints or claims whatsoever.

ProTek™ is manufactured from an advanced composite panel system which is lightweight and has wide design versatility. Being virtually inert, there is zero corrosion risk and the outstanding weather resistance, provides a maintenance free life for at least 30 years, with no pollution risk. The fire performance is certified by Lloyds and DNV and will withstand over two hours jet fire test at 0.3 kg /sec gas release, and blast tests up to 1.5 barg. DNV have examined and certified the SCS design methodology for fire and blast protection, effectively creating a type approval for the use of ProTek™ in such applications.

In addition to this control box enclosure, ProTek™ is widely used for ESDV/actuator protection, fire and blast walls, marine fire partitions, under-deck splash zones and flexible riser passive fire protection as well sub-sea structures and encapsulations. ProTek™ meets all current standards for fire and blast protection as well as thermal insulation. It recently also passed the Norsok noise attenuation test achieving up to 38DB reduction.

Solent Composite Systems is a member of the British Plastics Federation, Composites Group, and UK Composites. SCS is Achilles JQS and FPAL registered. In 2007 SCS was certified by DNV to ISO 9001 Quality, ISO 14001 Environmental and OHSAS 18001 under the Integrated Management System.

The company’s other main focus is in the burgeoning renewable energy sector, - both wind and tidal stream where it provides a portfolio of services in composites design including manufacturing of wind turbine blade moulds and related components.
