SCS Exhibits at AWEA Windpower 2009 Chicago

16th April 2009
AWEA Chicago UK based Solent Composite Systems Ltd (SCS) will exhibit its SmartMould™ integrated rotor blade manufacturing system (RBMS) at the AWEA WINDPOWER 2009 Exhibition and Conference in Chicago May 4th to 7th 2009. SCS booth number is 4324M on the UK Renewables Pavilion.

In today’s market where energy resources are increasingly critical, SCS has been playing a partnership role in Europe, assisting wind turbine manufacturers to reduce costs, and in so doing accelerate the attractiveness of wind energy as a sustainable energy source worldwide.

According to AWEA in 2008, with over 8,500 megawatts (MW) installed wind power provided 42% of all the new generating capacity added in the U.S. The new wind projects installed in 2008 represent an investment of $17 billion – the largest capital investment in the U.S. electricity sector that year. Hundreds of billions of dollars in investment – in wind project installations, wind turbine component manufacturing facilities, and transmission infrastructure to bring the new electricity to market – are poised to flow into the economy as wind power production ramps up

At WINDPOWER 2009, SCS offers a wide ranging value proposition for the US wind industry from turbine blade design, moulds and prototype development to manufacturing technology transfer, and intensive training for new start-up blade plants.

SCS offers wind turbine manufacturers “Smart” engineering features that make up its Smart Mould™ integrated approach for higher output and lower cost blade manufacturing. Smart Mould™ concepts rely on advanced composite materials, design, technology and well controlled processes – an area where SCS has developed considerable expertise, gained over the last 15 years.

Use of the SmartMould™ system can significantly impact on driving down turbine blade costs both in process and capital investment especially in high output blade plants, with reduction in waste and downtime.

The key to the SmartMould™ cost reduction principle lies in engineering techniques that significantly improve quality and productivity in the blade making process. This is largely related to after finishing costs, which continue to be a major bottleneck in rotor blade manufacturing plants around the world.

The SmartHinge™ and SmartLift™ provide simple single point lifting and turning techniques that enable fast, safe opening and closing of the mould. Combined with SmartJoint™ extremely accurate edges for precision mould joining are readily achievable.

The SmartShell™ and SmartHeat™ systems combine to deliver uniform surface finish and optimised curing cycle whatever combination of laminate structure. SCS has perfected an FEA simulation to cross reference blade laminate structure with that of the mould thus eliminating fatigue in the entire system, resulting in less downtime and lower maintenance.

The Company’s other main energy focus is in the offshore oil and gas sector, where it provides a portfolio of high performance structural composite solutions for passive fire and blast protection. This technology is now used for the offshore wind industry, providing protection for offshore substation transformers in HVDC transmission grid systems. Innovative SCS composite engineering provided a lightweight solution cost effective with world class safety and quality, in this demanding environment.

Solent Composite Systems is a member of the British Plastics Federation, Composites Group, and Composites UK. It is also member of EWEA and associate of AWEA.

SCS has an Integrated Management System certified by DNV incorporating ISO 9001 Quality ISO 14001 Environmental and OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety.
