SmartMould™ for Cost Effective Blade Production

12th November 2004
Matthew Chalk With increasing pressure to accelerate product development, reduce manufacturing costs and improve output whilst maintaining high quality, health and safety compliance, the composites industry is faced with numerous challenges.

Cost effective production is one of the main targets to increase volumes, develop new markets and become more profitable.

Meeting these challenges requires the combined effort of engineers, designers, materials suppliers and the manufacturer, with the SmartMould™ at the centre of the process.

By adopting the integrated SmartMould™ approach it is possible to manufacture a product with the optimum design from the right materials using the most efficient manufacturing process.

At Solent Composite Systems (SCS) we make moulds for a variety of products and each mould is produced to satisfy a very specific set of requirements. In our experience the SmartMould™ approach works best with the mould maker involved at the earliest possible stage in the product development. This way the mould design can evolve with the product design.

The mould lies at the heart of the production process since it embodies the designer’s shape combining the specified materials using the right process to create the product.

To successfully achieve this, the mould maker must have a good understanding of all aspects of the production cycle.

This understanding is strongly promoted at Solent Composite Systems based on our track record for supplying moulds to deliver the right product quality at the right cost.

Drawing on its accumulated knowledge dating back more than a decade, the company offers an unrivalled service in mould and component manufacture.

The design stage of the product life-cycle governs the form of the product and the composite materials from which it will be produced. Further development confirms the type and arrangement of the fibres, the selection of the resin system and ultimately a process to convert the raw materials into the final product. An intimate knowledge of these details at an early stage allows SCS to influence product development to enhance the customer’s production process.

At SCS we have many examples to demonstrate the success of this approach. This article will review two different mould types and offer insights into the latest developments for moulds that will continue to meet the challenges faced by the industry.
