Passive Fire & Blast Protection

Following the Piper Alpha disaster in the North Sea in 1988 a major research program was conducted by SCS predecessor SP Offshore, at the British Gas Research Station, Spadeadam, HSE Buxton Warrington Fire Research and SINTEF Norway.

Over £250,000 was invested in fire tests to develop the ProTek™ composite passive fire and blast protection system which has since proved invaluable in providing maintenance free fire and blast protection to numerous offshore installations in the North sea and other global offshore and onshore sites, with over 500 installations over the last 15 years with every major oil company. Most recently SCS have been contracted by Aker Stord to provide Fire and blast protection to the ESDV equipment at the Snøhvit Hammerfest LNG site.

Solent Composite Systems (SCS) has an unrivalled track record in design and manufacture of jet fire and blast protection systems. SCS has developed its ProTek™ structural composite panel system for a wide variety of high performance applications in the offshore oil & gas sector protecting equipment and personnel including:
  • ESDV/Actuator protection
  • Fire and Blast walls
  • Riser hang-off PFP
  • Marine fire partitions
  • TSRS, escape-ways and refuge shelters
  • Splash zone riser protection
The lightweight ProTek™ composite structural multi-layer construction is virtually inert, thus providing exceptional corrosion and weather resistance over a very long life cycle - significantly higher than traditional soft jacket systems. ProTek panels mounted are on a corrosion resistant steel frame to manage wind and blast loads, thus providing an extremely rigid but lightweight structure. Penetrations and vents may be designed in thus providing quick and easy on-site installation.

ProTek™ Certification

Blast ratings in excess of 1.5 Barg have been achieved and fire ratings are consistently meeting 2 hour hydrocarbon jet fire (J120) and 2 hour furnace fire (H150) plus pool fire.

ProTek will withstand 70 minutes Jet fire at 3.0kg/sec gas release after blast at 1.3 barg.

In all cases tests are supervised and certified by DNV or Lloyds register. SCS also has Achilles certification registration number 25494 in addition to ISO9001:2000.

ProTek composite enclosures are lightweight, easy to install and have maintenance free life expectancy in excess of 35 years. Comprehensive manufacturing records are held for a minimum of 10 years.

Subsea

Epoxy resins are high strength, very stable and fatigue resistant over a wide range of conditions. This makes them ideal for underwater applications particularly in deep waters. Solent Composites has many years experience in the design and manufacture of Subsea structures and encapsulations including:

  • Dropped object protection
  • Trawl board protection
  • SSBV enclosures
  • Control pod housings
  • ROV installable riser repair products
  • Secondary structures for deepwater risers
  • Deepwater buoyancy
  • Mud mats
  • Lightweight well-head umbilical connectors
  • Lightweight tow heads
  • High strength grouting (epoxy)
The rapid adoption of Subsea oil and gas well heads and process installations on the sea bed provides a major opportunity for cost and performance improvement using ProTek™ composites over traditional steel based structures. The light weight of epoxy/glass/carbon structures plays a major role in the design possibilities when constructing unmanned underwater vehicles and assemblies.
