ProTek® Fire and Blast protection Flange Covers

ProTek® flange covers are designed and engineered to protect ANSI flanges and compact flanges from failure due to the effects of blast followed by hydrocarbon jet fire. The protection cover also ensures that the flange bolts are fully protected throughout the duration of the jet fire.

The covers can be provided to meet a range of different blast and jet fire scenarios and to fit to the full range of standard flange sizes. 

The flange covers are manufactured using lightweight ProTek® composite technology that has been used on several hundred equipment enclosures currently installed on onshore plants and offshore installations in UK, Norway and the rest of the world.

The ProTek®flange covers are designed for use in harsh environments encountered offshore with no degradation in performance offering a low lifecycle cost for 30 year design life.

Technical integrity, zero maintenance and low life cost ProTek®flange covers provide inherent thermal  insulation, fire protection and noise reduction  characteristics in accordance with NORSOK R-004 Classes 5, 6, 7 and 8. 

Certification of the product is carried out by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) or Lloyd’s Register and is based upon full scale blast testing up to 1.5 barg overpressure and jet fire testing carried out for more than 2 hours.

The ProTek® flange covers are designed to incorporate earthing straps for connection across the pipe flanges. The covers are supplied as two semi-circular mouldings with a simple bolted connection that permits rapid assembly on site; the design also allows rapid dismantling and reassembly of the ProTek® covers for planned maintenance inspection of the pipe flanges.

ProTek® flange covers enclose a pipe flange and bolts and are located upon the pipeline so that there is no requirement to attach the covers directly to the flanges themselves. The structural properties of the durable ProTek®composite laminate support the blast and fire loads.

High Performance
  • Fire Protection up to 2.5 hours Hydrocarbon (H-Class), Jet fire (J-Class) or Pool fire and Cellulosic (A-Class) fires - all fully certified by third parties, who have witnessed full scale tests.  These tests achieve heat flux up to 350 kW / square metre. 
  • Blast Protection up to 1.5barg over pressure, plus suction loads – fully third party certified.   
  • Jet Fire after Blast - Tested to 1.3 barg followed by full scale jet fire. 
  • Thermal Insulation - keeps equipment temperatures below 45ºC whilst jet fire outside is more than 1200ºC.                 No additional thermal insulation is required as it is incorporated into the ProTek® structure.

  • Weather resistance - worldwide environmental conditions offshore onshore and subsea -50 to +50ºC continuous use and high wind and snow loads and ultraviolet and chemical resistance.  High temperature products for internal areas and modules can accommodate up to 120ºC service temperature.
  • Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) is suppressed by the use of additional ventilation points towards the top of the protection covers to promote the flow of air around the protected flange.
